AmeriCorps is the “domestic Peace Corps,” which engages full and part-time volunteers in intensive, results-driven community service. In exchange for a year of service, members receive a modest living allowance and an education award of up to $4,750 to repay existing qualified student loans or defray future costs of college, graduate school, or vocational training.
Nationwide, AmeriCorps members recruit and train thousands of new volunteers, patrol streets and recreation areas, tutor and mentor high-risk youth, organize neighborhood watch organizations, build affordable housing, immunize children, clean up rivers and streams, and help seniors to live independently. Federal funding for AmeriCorps programs is provided by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
