Rhode Island Service Alliance is committed to helping its grantees create service opportunities for all Rhode Islanders, regardless of their disability status. We are fortunate to have National Service Inclusion Project – a Corporation for National and Community Service training and technical assistance provider – located just a short drive away in Boston.
RISA regularly invites NSIP trainers to speak to program directors, program staff, and AmeriCorps members on a variety of topics related to inclusion of people with disabilities. Individual consultations are also available.
Also, the Project’s web site, accessible not only to AmeriCorps grantees, but also all other organizations provides detailed information on topics ranging from proper etiquette when communicating with people with disabilities to recruitment strategies to the impact participation in a national service program may have on members’ eligibility for federal assistance and benefits.
In addition to providing training and technical assistance, RISA is able to help its programs pay for reasonable accommodation. For example, we may be able to help pay for tutoring services for a member with a learning disability or adaptive equipment for a visually impaired member. If you would like to learn more about available resources and training opportunities, please send an e-mail to info@riservicealliance.org or call us at 401.331.2298.
